Podcast Episode 84. Romantic notions in dev...
In this episode we discuss several (repeating) themes. I posit that there are no more romantic notions about software development. It's mostly known, and mostly trivial and/or tedious. Actual discovery is reserved for a small few, and most devs are just there in the pixel mines, chipping away.
There were several parallels drawn with the automobile industry and how streamlined and homogeneous it has become, and how the software industry is largely following in the same steps.
Another topic was on the helplessness of the new cohort of developers, and how the current metric-driven development lifecycle does not align well with learning and growth. It then naturally flown into the subject of AI, an how, in my opinion, using AI is like if a healthy person would start using crutches. I draw parallels with strength training, and that, sure, you can lift five plates bar with a single hand if you're using a powered exoskeleton, but that's not the point.
